Well the minute that dude started playing everyone, myself especially, could not believe this guy was playing this stuff with the those crazy horn hits (I'm referring to "ya gotta try"....Then the drum trio...
Gadd's taste,Weckl's style,and VC's insane drumming.My god, VC's fills are a musical extension of the Gadd "fours" that preceded him...Not mention that f'ing fill where he blasts the china cymbal while playing those insane LEFT-HANDED 32 notes on the snare while maintaining some sick accents.Or than there's always the HOD lick....Vinnie never ran out of ideas at that performance....
I was a convert after that experience...
Like some folks VC led me into the world of musical diversity and authenticity....
He also sent me back into the historical research aspect of music.........

Classic! So true! In my neighborhood it's still Neil P. Them early RUSH LP's have produced much fruit. Fascinating how a drummer gets into the cultural mindset and sticks for MANY years.

This is interesting as well. What do folks who only listen to music enjoy. That IS the music audience for the most part, especially with pop music. A studio drummer like Gadd has perfected his internal "lick clock." He knows what to hit and when. I feel these types of players are master communicators of musical ideas. That's a big difference over playing licks & tricks, which drummers love. Every time I hear Gadd speak, he seems to mention playing in a way that makes the music FEEl good. Porcaro mastered signature fills that made musical sense...and he used them all the time!
The Angie Harmon stuff is still freakin' me out. Where did that come from? Very off the wall...very cool.

I watched tape two again today.
its hard to pass opinion on all the drummers who played on that tape. the all did a fantastic job, considering they are not big band players (except bellson of course).
i feel that weckl played superbly and played with all the qualities that he plays with now: style, ease, dynmaics and subtleties. and he swung his ass off!
vinnie definitely did steel the show in terms of how many chops he could fit into a song. he did swing and did play amazingly.....but he still just blows and blows, and its all really loud.....weckl for me, puts more thinking into his playing. it breathes more.
i just loved the bit after the first tune where vinnie gets up off the drums and beats the crap out of the dude standing next to him whos filming!
however, this was the first tape that made me sit up and notice vinnie cause he played so well. but the next tape i picked up (and the only one hes done) was the MD fest 2000 tape with Karizma and was very dissapointed.......lets hope this new hudson dvd is cool.

I was kinda disappointed at the MD 2000 right after I watched it but, after a few more viewings it became one of my favorites of Vinnie playing with a non-acoustic band. Lots of subtleties going on there like the very slow intro of "Toast For Eli" with the couple of weeks rest between the hits with the band and everyone coming in at the same time. The interplay and dynamic shifts w/Landau and Garfield not to mention some 1/4 note triplet modulations during Garfield's solo.
Although Vinnie uses all kinds of hand technique(finger control, some Moeller, etc., it was cool to see that he hasn't abandoned his 2 stick heights drum corps thing in order to use another technique exclusively, like S.Smith w/Moeller. Virgil, Garibaldi, although he did'nt do any kind of marching stuff to my knowledge, are the same way, 1/2" ghost notes and full stoke non-accented notes. I've always preferred that kind of sound as opposed to what guys like S. Smith, Danny Gottleib, John Riley, Joe Morello do.
I love it when he dead sticks his cymbals it's like, "Yeah I can mute this while playing it". He does'nt restrict himself technically to get the most textures out of the kit.
I saw Casey Scheurrel dead stick his ride cymbal for almost all of a piano trio performance and asked him about it and he said that he uses it to build the intensity for the soloist without getting loud. Interesting.
They ALL sucked on those tapes, i have the straws to prove it!
I agree about Modern Drummer fest 200O not being one of my favorite VC performances...(However I liked 20lb. PizzA)
I've come to the conclusion that Karizma plays better in intimate settings...The sound of the Hall seemed to be real boomy...That might have made it hard to make out the sublties in the mix...
Just a thought...
I've several times that Vinnie just doesn't like having his stuff copied. I also heard that he intentionally under played at the MD show because it was getting filmed. Considering how much he plays on ALL the other live Karizma stuff, I believe it.
That tape definitely changed things for me. Vinnie's left hand really blew me away along with the hand-foot Tony rolls. And of course, the greatest four bars in the trio part.
